6 Kaminoyama: The new stableboy

Start of 5 day stint on a farm, owned by the Dragon Spring Temple monk`s wife`s father.  幸 Happiness Farm. Lies on the dark, volcanic slopes of Mount Zao.  Overlooking another old castle town, Kaminoyama.

At night, outline of a black wall of mountains and town lights twinkling below.

The farmer is 72 years old, the farm just 12 years old.  He started the farm – and took up farming at 60 after retiring from High School teaching. He sleeps above the stables.  On a tatami-mat floor.  As I will in the room across from him.

Farm also has a horse-riding club. 6 horses.  My job is to clean out their horseshit in the morning.  And wrap grapes in the greenhouse in the afternoon.

I can hear the horses banging about below me.  Cleanout starts at first light.

I hope they don`t snore.
